By the 1920s, Barron Gift Collier had accumulated more than a million acres in Southwest Florida, and he was the state's largest landowner. When Collier first came to Florida in 1911, the state's southwest coast was a remote wilderness. "Frankly, I was fascinated with Florida and swept off my feet by what I saw and felt," he once said. Collier's vision transformed the area and laid the foundation for the luxurious lifestyle enjoyed at Grey Oaks Country Club. Collier gave his name to the county, and today his family carries on a tradition of excellence at Grey Oaks.
